Ed Bayne Award

Ed Bayne served as a coach for the Billings Royals Post 4 American Legion Baseball team from 1952 to 1973 and again from 1988 to 1992. He coached 20 State Championship teams, including the streak of 14 championships from 1954 to 1967. He took the Royals  to the National Legion World Series 4 times.

In 1960, they reached the championship game. His tenure put the BALB program on the map, but his priority was to help young men become responsible adults through academics, character, leadership, sportsmanship and citizenship. They were ambassadors for Billings, Montana and known throughout their road-trip stops as a "class act" on and off the field.

He took boys from all backgrounds and molded them into a total team unit. His avenue was baseball ... his goal was to make future leaders who understood the obligation of giving back to the community who supported them.

The recipients of this award exemplify the culmination of what "Eddie" hoped would happen. We had Ed from August 6, 1916 until July 19, 2003. "... And when the one Great Scorer shall come to write against your name, he will not mark if you won or lost, but how you played the game."

 Dave McNally Award

Dave McNally is one of our most famous graduates of the Billings American Legion Baseball program. He played on the Post 4 Royals for Coach Ed Bayne from 1958 to 1960. He had a record of 18 wins and only 1 loss in 1960, when they went to the National World Series and played in the championship game.

Dave played professional baseball for 14 years, 13 of those for the Baltimore Orioles. He compiled an overall win/loss pitching record of 184-119 and still holds the very distinct record of being the only pitcher to hit a grand slam home run in a World Series game.

The Billings Gazette and Sports Illustrated selected Dave McNally as Montana's Athlete of the Century. In 2002, Dave became one of the first players to receive the "Ed Bayne Award" with induction into the Billings American Legion Baseball Hall of Fame.

Dave passed away in December, 2002. In December 2003, in respect to his memory, his Billings Royals Post 4 uniform, number 16, was retired. That same year, the "Dave McNally Honorary Friend of American Legion Baseball Award" was inaugurated. This award is given, not to alumni who have played in the program, but to those who have devoted time and talent in other ways to ensure the continuation of our "Great American Past Time" in Billings.
